1985-2005: Awal Kehidupan

Jangan sangsikan musikalitasnya, karena dia juga berasal dari keluarga yang gemar seni, khususnya musik. Ayahnya, Pete, seorang New Yorker, adalah pemain perkusi. Ibunya, Bernie, berdarah Filipina keturunan “Puerto Rico”, adalah seorang penari hula. Pete dan Bernie memiliki 6 orang anak dan mengenalkan mereka pada berbagai jenis musik,reggae, rock, hip hop, dan R&B. Khusus untuk anaknya yang bernama Peter Gene Hernandez, Pete memanggilnya dengan nama Bruno, berhubung saat berusia 2 tahun, sang bayi bertubuh gempal, mirip dengan pegulat terkenal zaman itu, Bruno Sammartino. Nama itu yang kemudian dipilihnya sebagai nama panggungnya. Dan ketika memikirkan nama belakang untuk Bruno, dia langsung teringat akan para gadis yang menyebutkan dirinya bukan berasal dari bumi, yang lantas membuatnya terpikir akan Mars. Dan jadilah, Peter Gene Hernandez menjadi Bruno Mars, seperti yang kita kenal sekarang.Dia kelahiran 8 Oktober 1985. Dan dalam 25 tahun kehidupannya, hampir apa saja sudah dilakukannya dalam rangka mengasah kemampuan bermusiknya. Dari usia muda, dia sudah tampil meniru dan menyanyikan lagu-lagu Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley, The Isley Brothers, dan The Temptations. Saat usia sekolah, dia memperdalam kegemarannya terhadap Elvis, sekaligus memperluas pengetahuan musiknya lewat Prince dan The Police.

Usai menyelesaikan sekolahnya, dirinya pun hijrah ke Los Angeles untuk mewujudkan American Dream-nya. Dan Dewi Fortuna berpihak padanya, saat tahun 2006 lalu dirinya berkenalan dengan Aaron Bay Schuck, yang kemudian menjadi manajernya dan menawari kontrak di bawah nauangan “Atlantic Records”. Bruno Mars berada dalam jalur yang tepat menuju kesuksesan!

Apa yang harus ia lakukan sebagai langkah awal mencapai cita-citanya dalam industri ini? Tidak serta merta menjadi penyanyi, Bruno memulai dengan menulis lagu untuk penyanyi lain. Di muncul di credit untuk album Alexandra Burke (’Perfect’ from “Overcome”), Travie McCoy (”We’ll Be Alright’ from “Lazarus”), Brandy (’Long Distance’ from “Human”), empat buah lagu untuk album “Tomorrow” milik Sean Kingston, juga mega hit Right Round dari album “ROOTS” oleh Flo Rida. He’s the bomb. Dan kalau itu semua belum cukup, dirinya juga menyumbangkan karyanya untuk album Sugababes yang berjudul “Sweet 7″, adalah single “Get Sexy” yang merupakan karya terakhir girlband tersebut dengan seorang original member di dalamnya, “Keisha Buchanan”. Bruno pun mulai menjalal kemampuan vokalnya dengan menyediakan vokal latar di lagu tersebut. Selain itu, bersama “Philip Lawrence” dan “Ari Levine” dibentuklah trio “The Smeezingtons” yang memproduseri sebagian besar dari karya tulis Bruno.

Semakin PD dengan kemampuannya di balik layar, mengapa tidak muncul sebagai vokal tamu. Maka dimulailah kemunculan nama Bruno Mars sebagai guest appearance untuk album “Far East Movement” “Animal” di lagu ‘3D’, dan juga debut “Jaeson Ma” ‘Love’. Menang, ini masih kurang mengangkat kepopuleran Bruno ke permukaan, tapi selanjutnya, tidak ada yang bisa menghentikannya. Kita pertama tau dirinya dan vokalnya yang kuat dan seksi dari single nomor 1 “B.o.B”, Nothin’ On You juga solo debut Travie McCoy ‘Billionaire’. Kita dibuat lebih tertarik padanya ketimbang pada penyaji utama kedua single tersebut. Dan ini semua cukup untuk menjadi landasan yang kuat untuk tampil sendiri. Just The Way You Are pun diluncurkan pada pertengahan tahun lalu. Dan hasilnya bigger than ever. Jadi juara di berbagai tangga lagu di berbagai belahan dunia. Lagu ini memiliki chorus yang dahsyat, melodi dan lirik yang memorable, dan menampilkan yang terbaik dari Bruno Mars. “”He’s on the way to top and there’s no sign of stopping!””

Untuk Grammy Awards tahun 2010, kita dibuat tercengang dengan munculnya Bruno Mars dalam 6 kategori. “Best Rap Song, Best Rap/Sung Collaboration”, dan “Record Of The Year” untuk ‘Nothin’ On You’, “Record Of The Year” dan “Song Of The Year” untuk ‘F–k You’ yang dinyanyikan oleh Cee-Lo Green, “Best Male Pop Vocal Performance” untuk Just The Way You Are, dan “Producer Of The Year Non-classical” untuk trio The Smeezingtons. Ini bisa jadi menambah koleksi penghargaan yang diraihnya, setelah sebelumnya menyabet Soul Train Music Awards. Album debutnya “Doo-wops & Hooligans” yang berisi 12 track pun dirilis pada akhir Januari 2011 ini di Indonesia. Dan dalam menyambut kemeriahana tas kesuksesan pria bernama asli Peter Gene Hernandez ini, CreativeDisc memilihnya sebagai sorotan selama sebulan penuh dalam Artist Of The Month! Single keduanya “Grenade” pun enggak kalah sukses. Adrie Subono selaku pimpinan Java Musikindo mendatangkan Bruno Mars ke Indonesia pada tanggal 5 April^[2] yang konsernya akan bertempat di Tennis Indoor Senayan, Jakarta.^[3][4]

Iya, itu bener. Nanti tanggal 5 April konsernya. Kebetulan dia kan mau main di Manila, Filipina, nah langsung kita tarik untuk main di Indonesia. Kebetulan juga kan dia lagi happening banget, jadi ya langsung kita tawarin buat konser di sini.[2]

Untuk tiket dijual pada 3 Februari^[2] dengan harga Festival Rp 600.000,00 dan Tribune Rp 500.000,00.^[3][5] Tiket konser kali ini lebih murah dibanding Maroon 5 karena beda kelas. Namun Java Musikindo memastikan Bruno Mars ini juga tak kalah dengan Maroon 5 dalam banyaknya penggemar.^[2] Ketika promotor musik Java Musikindo membuka penjualan tiket konser Bruno Mars, kurang dari 7 jam sekitar 7 ribu tiket konsernya habis terjual.^[6]

Bruno Mars baru pertama kali mengadakan konser di Indonesia, bukan berarti penampilan Bruno Mars sepi dari penonton. Ternyata cukup banyak memiliki penggemar di Indonesia. Terbukti dengan habisnya penjualan tiket konsernya dan penuhnya penonton di Istora Bung Karno, Senayan, Jakarta dan sebelumnya mereka pun rela antri untuk bisa menonton penampilan Bruno Mars.^[7]

Bruno Mars mengawali penampilan dengan beraksi menabuh drum. Dia langsung membawakan lagunya yang cukup hits, "The Other Side".
